Where you could donate

We feel it is most effective to support those organizations with an active, on-the-ground presence in Haiti and where the money you contribute goes to a direct assistance provider.

- The Red Cross (for disaster management specialists). The American Red Cross generated $7 million within 24 hours by offering an option to text message « Haiti » to 90999 for $10 donations, setting a record for mobile donating. You could also donate through Apple iTunes.
- Doctors Without Borders (treating people on the ground and in an inflatable hospital)
- Action Against Hunger (safe water and sanitation)
- Hope for Haiti (medical supplies and construction materials)
- Closer to our industry you could consider Habitat for Humanity, the ULI Disaster Relief Fund or the Built Environment Action Register or the Global Housing Foundation.
- Still not sure? You can also check out charitynavigator.org or donate some of your airplane miles and hotel points.

Do something now! I was in Chennai, India after the tsunami and saw first hand what these organizations were able to achieve; but they need our support. Thanks, JC Goldenstein CREOpoint Founder

PS: You could also ask your friends to do the same after they have checked out updates from this crowdsourced real time crisis map and on Wikipedia (building and infrastructure damage, living conditions and ongoing rescue actions)

The US Federal Reserve estimates the total Aggregate Market Value of US Residential Real Estate to be $US 19.718 trillion (1Q2008) and a estimated replacement cost of residential real estate structures to be $14.283 trillion (1Q 2008) at a time when the US GDP was $14.441 trillion (or about $US 47,495 per dwelling unit). As a macro-metric "replacing all structures" as Professor Kiremidjian of Stanford seems to suggest (http://www.creopoint.com/video/stanford-univ-explains-the) (over a 10-year period) is a number roughly equal to a country's single-year of GDP -- which for Haiti (GDP) would be $US 6.952 billion (1Q 2008) (or about $US 2,780 per dwelling unit).

The recently published Oxford University/U.N. paper “From natural catastrophe to economic security” shows that Haiti also has long term challenges but they are not hopeless. Harvard argues that more funds should be devoted to disaster preparedness and reconstruction.

Many CREOpoint members who are not on the ground in Haiti have asked how they can specifically help. We've done some research and set up this forum.

CREOpoint is a community of 35,000 influential property and construction professionals in 50 countries. How could we best facilitate the conversation so that the brightest minds can contribute expertise to the massive urban planning, infrastructure, environmental sustainability and economic development efforts that are needed?

Soon the media spotlight will have moved on, and without a decent and sustainable way to earn a living, hundreds of thousands of Haitians will suffer long beyond the immediate aftermath of the earthquake.

The devastation has underscored the Internet's critical role in connecting the world's population in times of tragedy. If you choose to help, consider joining the online conversation. Contributions from our industry will be publicized on this forum (www.creopoint.com/profile/DisasterReliefForum), and if you’d like, you could add your thoughts here. CREOpoint is now available in 13 languages, which can help bridge the gaps between CRE professions, as well as transcend boundaries.

I hope our virtual world and actions help contribute to the lifeline for Haiti.

Meanwhile let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you, JC

The devastating earthquake in Haiti has underscored the Internet's critical role in connecting the world's population in times of tragedy. In response to this, CREOpoint has launched the Disaster Relief forum where the commercial property industry can educate themselves and find out how to help not only in Haiti but wherever disaster and misfortune may strike.
