UK Government Drops Empty Property Rates Bombshell!

Business rates relief for empty property with a Rateable Value under £18,000 is to be scrapped. Currently such properties benefit from 100% relief but Bob Neill (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Communities and Local Government) yesterday confirmed that Government will gain an extra £400m a year in revenue from empty offices, retail and industrial properties. The clock is ticking for the 2005 Rating List in the UK and with it the potential to recover cash refunds back dated to 1 April 2005.On 1 April this year the new 2010 Rating List comes into force and the 2005 Rating List will be closed. When closed it will no longer be possible to challenge those rateable values and secure refunds of business rates overpaid.Dunlop Heywood has saved clients circa £50,000,000 in rates payable through successful appeals during 2009.See More
