Stanford Univ. explains the collapse of buildings in Haiti

Stanford University researchers study earthquakes, how they damage buildings and how buildings can be designed to resist the violent shaking seen in the Haitian tragedy.
In this video, Anne Kiremidjian, professor of civil and environmental engineering, explains why so many buildings collapsed in Haiti and how long it will take to rebuild.

The US Federal Reserve estimates the total Aggregate Market Value of US Residential Real Estate to be $US 19.718 trillion (1Q2008) and a estimated replacement cost of residential real estate structures to be $14.283 trillion (1Q 2008) at a time when the US GDP was $14.441 trillion (or about $US 47,495 per dwelling unit). As a macro-metric "replacing all structures" as Professor Kiremidjian suggests (over a 10-year period) is a number roughly equal to a country's single-year of GDP -- which for Haiti (GDP) would be $US 6.952 billion (1Q 2008) (or about $US 2,780 per dwelling unit).
